Lives in the Yiddish Theatre

SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE YIDDISH THEATRE
AS DESCRIBED IN ZALMEN ZYLBERCWEIG'S "LEXICON OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE"

1931-1969

Chaim David Ariel

D. was born on 15 November 1881 in Lodz, Poland. He studied in a cheder and finished three classes at Konshtat's school.

Due to the fact that his father maintained a restaurant where Yiddish actors used to eat, he had an opportunity in this way to make their acquaintance. Having the ability to dance, Julius Adler took him in, and with three members as a dancer, into the troupe of Vaysfeld. When Adler heard him sing, he took him into the chorus.

In 1899 Ariel went into the chorus of Zandberg.

In 1904 the actor Shlomo Tsuker took him in to Vilna to be in Sabsey's troupe, where he began to act in small roles.

In 1910 he acted with Harlamp-Konievska in Kremenchug, with Fiszon in Yekaterinoslav, then in Odessa, until 1916, when he came to Rappel.

From his troupe he went over to S. Krause's, to act in Constantinople, Romania, again back to Odessa, where he became engaged to Boaz Yungvitz and Iser Bezman, then he went with Bezman to Kiev, Berdichev, until they arrived in Lodz.

He was accustomed to acting in Lodz as a member of various troupes, especially in the members' troupes. His wife Rukhl and son Harry had also acted on the Yiddish stage. A. was killed by the Nazis.
