Born in 1867 in Berdichev,
Ukraine.
His parents were
manufacturers and haberdashers.
He learned in a cheder and
completed the municipal school. As his parents had been
owners of a circus building and a summer garden with a
theatre, B. even in his early youth came into contact
with Yiddish actors. Later, when B. was already an
independent businessman, he liquidated his business, and
in 1893 he became the "financier" of Bernstein's troupe,
and soon thereafter he took over the troupe (enhanced
through Spivakovsky and Sh. Krause) as partners.
After six years he
traveled with the local troupe in which he alone also
acted, B. went around as manager for Kaminski, and he
worked for him for seven years, afterwards crossing over
as manager for Zandberg in Warsaw and Lodz. In wartime,
