SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE YIDDISH THEATRE
AS DESCRIBED IN ZALMEN ZYLBERCWEIG'S "LEXICON OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE"

1931-1969



 

Izrael Bialkowicz
 

B. was born on 15 March 1890 in Lodz, Poland. His father was a super. At the age of fifteen he learned in a cheder; later he worked with a weaver. In his early years, B. often attended the Yiddish theatre, and farkert in "amateur" circles until he founded by himself a circle with actor Mittelman as regisseur, and on 20 July 1909 in Lodz's Grand Theatre he arranged a production, in which he performed for the first time, then he often traveled with the circle across the province.

In 1911 B. traveled to Russia in the troupe of Sharavner-Weisblatt (Michalesko), then went across to the troupe of Lantzman with whom he went on tour across Russia. In 1914 he acted in Lodz's Skala Theatre with Julius Adler-Serotsky, and after acting until 1921 in various troupes in Poland and Russia he became the initiator of various troupes with whom he acted across Poland.
