Lives in the Yiddish Theatre

SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE YIDDISH THEATRE
AS DESCRIBED IN ZALMEN ZYLBERCWEIG'S "LEXICON OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE"

1931-1969



 

Shabtai Bliacher

 

B. was born in July 1904 in Vilna, Polish Lithuania. His father was an employee.

He learned in cheders, and later in a cheder-[mtukn] "Turt Amt", then for a short time in the "Tfadt bhurim" yeshiva. In 1917 he entered into the Hebrew gymnasium, and here he participated in the Hebrew play "Dovid uglit", directed by Morevsky. When in 1919 through the Vilna kahal a group of children was sent out to a summer colony near Warsaw, B. traveled with them and founded with the assistance of the teacher in the children's home a dramatic circle which he directed, in which he also staged fourteen productions in a span of  one-and-a-half years. B. attended in Warsaw the last class of the Yiddish secular school (Dluga 26), traveled back to Vilna, and learned for a year in the Technicum, participated in the dramatic studio of the art society (regisseur  Daniel Bela and later Avraham Slabodski), and he lead at the same time by himself with an entire range the dramatic circle in Vilna and the province. B. participated hereupon in the theatre

 

for artistic [eskizn] for the art society, set over the same theatre Erich Karn's "Kolombina" and Yushkevitsh's "Zeyn eydem". At the end of 1923 he became an administrator collaborating with Kadish and Khash, in 1925 -- episodic roles for Zygmunt Turkow, then a members troupe, again in Vilna with  Kutner, then again with Morevsky, Lipman and in the province. Then B. was engaged in Riga's "Nayer yidisher teater", where he has acted for the last three seasons.
