Lives in the Yiddish Theatre

SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE YIDDISH THEATRE
AS DESCRIBED IN ZALMEN ZYLBERCWEIG'S "LEXICON OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE"

1931-1969

Mordechai Hilsberg

H. was born in 1897 in Warsaw, Poland, to Chasidic parents. He sang as a choir boy in a shul and was taken in to the local children's chorus of the Yiddish theatre, where he acted, later in children's roles.

In 1915 he began to act in roles for adults, especially in lover roles in the Goldfaden repertoire. In 1917 he acted in Ester Rachel Kaminska's troupe. After the pogroms in Russia he entered in 1920 into the Kiev "Unzer vinkl", then into Zaslavsky's "Kunst vinkl".

Since 1921 he returned to Poland and has acted in various operettas and dramatic troupes: in 1926 with Julius Adler in Warsaw, 1927 in Riga's "New Yiddish Theatre" (Regisseur: Morevsky), in 1928-9 in Riga's "Comedian Theatre" (Regisseur: Kutner), and in 1929-30 again in Riga's "New Yiddish Theatre" (Regisseur and direction by Julius Adler -- M. Rubin).
