Lives in the Yiddish Theatre

SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE YIDDISH THEATRE
AS DESCRIBED IN ZALMEN ZYLBERCWEIG'S "LEXICON OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE"

1931-1969

Avraham Levin

L. was born on 26 October 1898 in Vilna, Polish Lithuania. His father was an optician. In 1915 he completed the Vilna government gymnasium. On the eve of the German occupation, he left Vilna and became a prompter with a Yiddish troupe in southern Russia, which had, due to the ban on Yiddish theatre, performed Yiddish repertoire in Russian.

In 1922 he began to act in Yiddish in Bobruisk and other cities of White Russia. In the same year he came to Poland and after the necessary examinations he became a member of the Warsaw Professional Artists Union. He entered into a Yiddish operetta troupe in Vilna, then toured with Esther Rukhl Kaminska's troupe across the kresn (occupied territories in Poland). Later he acted in "Vik't" in Warsaw's Central Theatre, and with the same troupe he went on tour across Poland and Galicia. Then he acted for a year in Vilna with Z. Turkow, Samberg, Kutner, Ida Kaminska, Shriftzetser and under the direction of Morewsky.

In 1926 he immigrated to Argentina, where he acted in the Folks Theatre, Olympia and Ambu, later traveling to Montevideo (Uruguay), where he left the professional stage and directed a drama circle with the M. Winchevsky Worker's Cultural center.

L.'s sister is the actress Berta Zaslavska.
