AS DESCRIBED IN ZALMEN ZYLBERCWEIG'S "LEXICON OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE"

Karl Weinberg
(Chaim Herbst)

W. was born on 15 February 1893 in Warsaw, Poland.

His father was a sugar baker.

He completed a folkshul. Out of love for the theatre he became a shill for actors, later an understudy, and at the age of seventeen he became a chorus singer.

In 1910 he traveled with a group of young Yiddish actors and debuted in the village Wladawa as "Hotsmakh".

In 1912 he acted for a short time in the troupe of guest-starring Avraham Axelrod and accompanied him to Czernowitz. Then he acted for Aschkenazy in Rumania and again for Axelrod in Czernowitz.

In 1915-16 he acted with a member troupe across Hungary, then in Chekhye, 1917 in Galicia with Ebell, in 1918 in Krakow with Jacob, from 1919-22 in

Lublin and its environs under the direction of Hershkovitsh, in 1923 with Chaim Sandler and since then in various member groups.

In 1916 W. participated in Budapest in the films "Lion Lema' and "Simon Yudit".
